Checking Your Credit Report

Keep track of your credit report.  In today’s lending environment nothing is more important than your credit score.

Free copies of your credit report are available once a year from the three large credit reporting firms: Experian, TransUnion and Equifax.  You can get your free report through AnnualCreditReport.com.

If you find a mistake, you can file a dispute online or through the mail with those credit bureaus.  The agencies are required to investigate and reply within 30 days.  If you are getting nowhere do not turn to ‘credit-repair’ advertisers.  Instead you should try the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.  The CFPB is a new federal agency that regulates the credit bureaus and can help consumers who have problems with their credit reports or complaints about credit scoring or debts.
