The Willamette Meridian

What is the Willamette Meridian and why talk about it regarding real estate?

All properties in Washington and Oregon are referenced to this point.  The Willamette Meridian was established June 4th, 1851 and runs from the Canadian border to the northern border of California. The base line runs from the Pacific Ocean to the Idaho border.

The original stake was replaced by a large stone in 1855 and is now part of The Willamette Stone Park in Portland.

The Willamette Stone is the “Initial Point” or Point of Beginning of the Willamette Meridian. All land surveys and property descriptions in Oregon and Washington are referenced to this point. Established in 1851 under the direction of John B. Preston, the first Surveyor General of the Oregon Territory, the surveys completed from this location promoted settlement of the Northwest and began the transfer of land from government ownership to private ownership.
